I have an upcoming conference presentation about some of the work I’ve been doing with career exploration and development. This work is a big part of our college-wide push to improve student success and completion here at Sinclair.
Our Career Communities are an attempt to “shrink the college” and allow students to solidify their career and academic goals, ensure they are on a proper pathway to success, and network and receive support from other students, faculty, staff, and working professionals while they do it.
I think this is especially important at an institution like Sinclair where we don’t have on-campus and most of our students just come here for class and then leave in order to get to work, families, or other obligations. Allowing them to join a group with similar academic and career interests, and to interact and learn outside of a formal class setting can be hugely beneficial.
This work isn’t immediately related to my position as a librarian and originated more as service to the college, although the collaborative relationships we’ve formed have resulted in a major increase in awareness of library resources and services.
My upcoming presentation, however, is all about our library role in student success and what we’ve done for our career communities as librarians.
I’ll be presenting with my colleague Lajmar who chairs the Business career community (I chair the Health Sciences one) and is titled. Librarians and Career Communities: Fostering Community for Student Success. The conference is the 2018 SOCHE Library Conference taking place at the Miami University Voice of America campus on May 18. I’ll post a link to our slides after the presentation.
