Another year, another new website for me. And I’m really excited that this one might turn into something bigger. I’ve been living and working here in Dayton, Ohio for nearly five years now, and it didn’t take long for me to become fascinated by the city and its history. I probably couldn’t have located Dayton on a map a year before moving here to work at Sinclair Community College, but when I started to learn about its past as an early industrial powerhouse, my interest was piqued and I started to read widely on everything Dayton.
One thing I did hear a lot about as I planned my move to Dayton in 2013 was that it was a dying, crime-ridden place and that I should stay out of the city proper. Well, the fact that my job was right downtown and I very much wanted an environment where I could walk or bike to work, as well to restaurants, bars, and whatnot, I figured I’d give it a try. I fell in love with the Oregon District neighborhood and have lived there ever since. Now that I live in greater Downtown Dayton I’m very much invested in projects and developments that are adding to our cityscape or giving an old building new life.
My new website is a blog about Dayton, and I cover its illustrious history as well as what the city is doing today to stay relevant. The site is called Dayton Vistas, and I explain there that
The word vista means a pleasing view, but it also can mean a “comprehensive mental view of a series of remembered or anticipated events.” Dayton Vistas features quite a few images shot in Dayton (both historic and contemporary), but also longer reflections about the city’s history as well as what it is doing today to reinvent itself. This can include histories of individual buildings, either lost or saved; glimpses at industries and businesses of Dayton’s past; updates on new developments in the city core and their implications; and profiles of popular cultural destinations in Dayton today, often with a look at their sites’ past.
