Since my last post last summer, my Lost Dayton-related activities have been going well. I’ve been invited to do several more book presentations which I’ve greatly enjoyed, and book sales have been going pretty well too.
The largest audience I’ve spoken to (probably ever) was at a unique and fun event: Dayton Pecha Kucha Vol. 37. The Dayton chapter of a worldwide series of concise lightning talks that originated in Japan, it was definitely the most challenging presentation format I’ve encountered: 20 slides that automatically advance, giving you only 20 seconds each. This format takes away my well-practiced ability to ramble and improvise when I think of something new to say!
I also got a chance to present at the Engineers Club of Dayton, founded by the very Edward Deeds and Charles Kettering who make appearances in my book in the Delco and NCR chapters. The audience there was great: a large group of engineers and other Dayton professionals who have extensive knowledge of Dayton history. They asked excellent some questions and we had a good back-and-forth discussion.
I also gave a presentation at Sinclair, where I focused on the downtown locations that Sinclair occupied before our current campus, as well as what the area looked like before it was cleared out for the college.
I presented at the downtown library in the Summer, and my Spring schedule has been full already too, with appearances at several Dayton Metro Library branches, and I have several more in the coming weeks. I’ll also be a presenter at the Dayton Bicycle Club as well as at a special event at the Dayton Club called Reading Between the Wines hosted by the Junior League of Dayton.
